Can anyone recommend a nice hotel in the Shannon area? Something in the lower price range would be good.

Skip the hotel idea. Take an airport bus to Sixmilebridge (3 euro) and stay at the Jamaica Inn hostel. It's the nicest hostel I stayed at in Ireland, simply because it's rural, quiet, and very clean. I've stayed several times and only once was there anyone else in my dorm. The last time I stayed there, there was a school group and the owner offered me a private room for the same price right off the bat, just so I wouldn't have to deal with the kids.

There's a kitchen that serves breakfast inside the hostel as well. It's pretty popular with folks in the area, so it's a good place meet some people.

If you spend money freely, there's a hotel right in front of the airport, but their cheapest room was 90 euro last time I was there. I stayed there the night before my flight and it was really nice, but I paid with money I made on a farm, so I didn't really feel the loss. If you have the time, take the bus.
