I know eeyartee has one (the Global Trip), but I was wondering if anyone else has gone this route?

I've begun work on my own (Mark Feenstra)and am looking for other examples to work from. I've borrowed heavily from my one example (thanks eeyartee Big Grin ) and am currently lacking in published samples, but I figured now's the time for me to get it started so that I can watch it grow.

Any tips, ideas, comments?

I've been posting my writing for about five years now, most of it located now at my main website ( http://www.jasonpettus.com ). I also hand out electronic versions of my books for free at the site ( http://www.jasonpettus.com/ebooks ) - I find that the small lack of revenue is more than made up for by the increase of readership, feedback I receive, donations for things like travelling, and more sales of the paper books.

Jason, that's a pretty sweet idea with handing out the electronic books. A bit a of a teaser/ way to raise awareness. How does it help the paperback sales; i.e., how do you see the correlation who get the e version, and then come back for the paper?

Pretty sharp-lookin' site too. I might've missed this, as I only looked around for a touch, but I didn't see any sort of bio on you. Have you thought about adding that?

Another tip for if you do your own HTML coding: Keep things as consistent as possible. If you code a page one way, code the next page the same way. That way, site-wide changes are easier. There are other technical options - CSS, SSI, etc. - that can make that even easier, but for just straight HTML, consistency and a little extra forethought on coding up-front, can save you a lot of time on revamps and updates.

Cheers, Anthony

About making websites I have some recently gained knowledge.

After doing some major searching, I have found that ASPBite.com offers an amazing FREE content management system. Its really awesome.

It took me about 6 hours total of work (basically because I am programming illiterate) and I made this: http://www.individualswithoutborders.org/aspbite/categories/index.asp

It took me 6 hours including graphics and everything, however, if you wanted a more simple site, which had a content management system, you could use the default template which is included and be up and running in about an hour.

This site is going to be the home of Individuals without Borders, but what is really amazing is the content management system.

I do not have to deal with html at all. I make my categories, and click new article and a microsoft word type window opens, I just paste it in and poof its all there. You can even ad images. I cannot rave enough about this, I was going to spend 250 for a much less feature rich content management system, but now im set.

One of the REALLY good things for online writers is the premium content sections. I dont use them, but you can set it so that users register and pay a paypal donation (all automatic) and then they can access parts of the site that were blocked before.

So in theory you could have 10 of your works out for free, and maybe for a $10 donation you could upgrade your account to see 100 more of your works if they liked what they saw.

And it has its own forums.

If you want to spend some time and make a really large or really feature rich site, aspbite is the way to go.

Oh course if you want just a little site, simple HTML will do fine.

Hey e,
When you made the "Would you..?" clip, did you have to ask E.S. Posthumus for permission to use the music?

No, because it's non-for-profit.

Copyright lawyers only throw a hissy fit if you start making money off of someone else's work. "Would You" is just a motivational trailer that I did for myself that I decided to share.

If someone wanted to buy "Would You" from me, then I would have to pursue music rights from ASCAP and tag that cost onto the price.

A copyright lawyer once told me the WORST thing you can do (contrary to popular belief) is credit someone else's work with a copyright. It says you admit it's not yours and you use it anyway.

If you want to get technical, my use of "Nara" in "Would You" falls under Fair Use.

quote:
The "fair use" exemption to (U.S.) copyright law was created to allow things such as commentary, parody, news reporting, research and education about copyrighted works without the permission of the author. That's important so that copyright law doesn't block your freedom to express your own works -- only the ability to express other people's. Intent, and damage to the commercial value of the work are important considerations.

Anyone out there want to argue that my use of "Nara" in "Would You" damages his work?

I think I will have to contact the artist...somehow....Smile

news
reporting

This guy is just citing examples of non-commercial uses. If you want to get technical, my fair use of "Nara" could fall under commentary, news reporting, research and/or education. Funny how laws are written so they can be interpreted differently amongst individuals. (Must be a ploy written by lawyers to keep lawyers employed.)

Back in my indie film festival days, I attended a class on entertainment copyright law. The teacher said that the laws sound scary, but the bottom line is it's all about money, and no one will throw you in jail or raise a flag unless you are really making big bucks using someone's work.

Parody gets tricky, since a lot of times the use of another artist's work is often used to poked fun of it, leading to arguments of intent and damage of the original work.

HT, provided you have purchased the music legally and are not exploiting it for commerical purpose, there is no harm in using the music to play during your presentation. What constitutes commercial purpose is however the grey area. Will you benefit monetarily by making the presentation? If yes, dont use the music. And all this advise is just from reading up on things, cant say that I am an expert on the subject. Smile

I give you all credit. You're creating something out of nothing... building up sites to showcase your work. Good stuff.

Thanks dusty. I actually contacted the band and asked them for their permission. They agreed. Will send them the presentation just to make sure.

BTW, the band I am talking about is Indus Creed. You may have heard of them. They were pretty big in India a few years ago.
