hello all

I'm trying to locate a low-cost web hoster with easy to use online software for updating your site via the internet (not FTP or otherwise).

We want to do a personal RTW website to keep our peeps informed on our whereabouts and adventures, but will not be bringing a laptop with us and will reply on internet cafes for updating our site (yep, I know, spendy and sketchy, but it's all we gots).

I was told angelfire's not bad. Any other suggestions or tips? I'm a novice website creater and have the site already created in MS Frontpage...just looking for a few good hosts...

Thanks
cs

I use a Geocities site. Free. Works fine, and even a bonehead like me can make a nice webpage.

Oh my good lord... how much time do you have before you leave?

Hopefully it's not too late to abandon Front Page. HTML is sooooo easy to learn and works soooo much better.

You might have to get someone to set it up for you, but I recommend the program Moveable Type for journaling your trip. The program is available at: www.movabletype.org/ and you can see a sample of my site at Marknabbs.blog

For hosting, it depends on what you need and how much you want to pay. There are sites out there which will give you ad free basic hosting for a one time set up fee of around $25 or monthly fees of $5 to $15. I'm hosted at www.phpwebhosting.comand pay $9.99 USD per month for great service. This gives me my own email accounts, the option to use my own domain name (costs about $15 to $40 anually) and php scripting with an sql database... not that you'll need that last part, but it's nice to have once you learn about it Wink

Hmm, I actually think bootsnall sets up blog services for people at a reasonable rate, and baliblog and written road are both done with Moveable type... I'll try and find the info on that.

found it... http://consulting.bootsnall.com/travel/blog.shtml

I don't mean to undercut the boys at bna, but if you really wanted to learn, you could do it for cheaper on your own. If you're computer illiterate then you might want to consider eliciting their services.

Thanks Markus and Joe--I will take it all under advisement. I do have plenty of time to get out of Frontpage. I was really just messing aorund with design ideas anyways...I'm not a big fan of the program

If you don't care about posting photos online and just want to update your friends and fam on what you're doing (i.e. live diary), check out the free Blogger. It's easy to use and did I mention free? I have one (which will eventually be used on my actual travels)...address is in my profile if you wanna check it out.

Smile I was just going to recommend blogger.

There's also www.blogspot.com which offers fairly cheap hosting I think.

This adiobloggerthing seems really cool as well. You just call the number and it does your blog entry as an mp3 file.

Funny you folks should be talking about this here...this thread has a lot of good info for setting you a personal travel site.

We have been talking a lot about this at the office/garage as well....and here is a little sneak preview of what we are gonna do...

All BootsnAll members (from the boards and writers) will be eleigible for a free blog hosted and designed by BootsnAll if a certain number of points are earned. I can't give all the details cuz we are still working on it...but I do know that many BootsnAll folks like Delara will have already qualified for one if she wants it.

We are busting our arses to get this done this week.
