I'm sure it's been asked a million times on here (but this is my first post so I don't know), but who has actually successfully sold their travel tales. Be it to a publisher or a travel guidebook. Just out of curiosity

I have to confess I haven't tried yet but I found this guide very useful for when I DO write a damn good travel story ;-)

Travel Writers Publishing Guide

The guide has over 500 travel editors, submission guidelines, pay rates and contact info.

Good luck! -Amanda

I submitted a 2000-ish word travel essay to a well-known travel magazine and they accepted it after they edited it to suit their needs. It's now about 450 words & bears little resemblance to what I submitted. Oh well ... I'm looking on the bright side though - it is a publication. My luck, it'll be pulled before it goes to press.

I wrote up a proposal for my summer trip, and received two grants for teachers to fund it. I'll be going to Italy to photograph and research a website about ancient Roman life. I'm hoping to have two complementary sections: a chronological travelogue and a thematically-arranged guidebook. With lots of photos.

I'll be staying in Rome an academic/religious retreat with DSL access in the rooms, so I should be able to upload every night. I think I've got enough outside funding for me to stay during all of July and half of August.

I'm beginning to realize that there are TONS of grant opportunities out there for teachers who want to travel. If I pull this off, I want to go to Greece next.
