Hi all! I havent been on the board for a while because I've been busy working on http://wikitravel.org. We currently have over 800 articles and we need more!
If you are an experienced travel guide writer, then we need you. If you have written travel stories or logs and want to try branching out, we need you. If you have never written anything for anyone, well, here's a great place to start. You can see a list of articles in demand at http://www.wikitravel.org/article/Wikitravel:Requests_for_articles and find out all about how wikitravel, and wikis in general, work at http://www.wikitravel.org/article/Wikitravel:Help You don't even have to create an account if you don't want to-- just click on the 'edit this page' link at the bottom of any page to add your info or make an edit. Let me know if you have any questions. Hope to see you on the site! Maj --- www.majink.org -home www.wikitravel.org -away |

Hmm, anything specific? The great thing about the site is that, if anything bugs you, you can go ahead and change it. We have a lot of discussion about the organization, so please chime in on the site, or let me know here what suggestions you have.
Thanks! maj --- www.majink.org -home www.wikitravel.org -away |

My first impulse was to look up local info to see how everything was structured and what kind of entries were being made.
Problem was, other than the search feature (which I don't like using) I couldn't find a simple way there. I want to be able to click through to get to where I'm going. ie: Index > N. America > Canada > British Columbia > Vancouver Maybe I was missing the easy way to look that up? _____________________ [Still Wandering] [Halcyon Climbing] |

Cool, thanks for pointing this out. I just started a talk page about navigation...
Try from here: http://www.wikitravel.org/article/List_of_countries Or you can go right to: http://www.wikitravel.org/article/Canada Or http://www.wikitravel.org/article/Vancouver Click on "edit this page" to update or add stuff to either page... we're still jsut getting started. And check the main page again in a few hours and I bet we will have made some changes. Like I said, great thing about wikis is how quick the feedback loop is. Thanks for helping out! And let me know if you have other comments/questions maj --- www.majink.org -home www.wikitravel.org -away |

That's the page I was looking for, all you need now is an obvious link to that from the main page... or the main nav menu for that matter. _____________________ [Still Wandering] [Halcyon Climbing] |

Done! It appears the Destinations section got "lost" last time we redesigned the main page. I've added the top level links to the page and we're working on a better design. Anyone who's interested can join in the 'fun'-- all pages also have a "discuss this page" link for comments/questions...
thanks again! maj --- www.majink.org -home www.wikitravel.org -away |

These kinda posts really make me cross
(unless of course you want to pay me to write for you - then that's ok) - people who use bootsnall to advertise their crappy sites should at least offer Sean et al. a decent slice of revenue.... have you done that? Philip www.philipblazdell.com |

hmm I agree with you if it is advertising for other sites that basicly do the same things bootsnall does, or try to make a profit. They're just using the popularity of BnA to get their own site of the ground.
However I find the concept of Wikitravel different (I admit, I have just taken a quick look), the focus is not so much on the individual sharing his/hers ideas or stories but on various people working on one guide, where all the articles can be edited by other users to correct mistakes, make additions etc. Although I like the more personal touch of BnA, I believe this website has a right to exist next to BnA as it is no copy of it. I'm glad I now have the link as it may be a usefull resource in the future. And as it is a non-profit thing I don't see why he/she can't mention his/her site here. Maybe it's a good idea to make a general link sub-forum (in addition to the continent specific ones) so these posts don't interfere with regular discussion, and people who do not like them can easily ignore. Just my 2 cents, Jintro |

Thanks Jintro.
That post was pretty upsetting, though I probably shouldn’t let it get to me. Just to be clear: *I've been a BnA contributor for a few years now and I'm an avid fan of the site. *Wikitravel is _very_ different, though there is some overlap. We don't do first-person stories or logs or blogs (I love BaliBlog!). There are no ads or commercial-tie ins (I personally use the BnA link to book hotels all the time) and all the content goes under the Creative Commmons copyleft. In fact, there are no "authors" or "editors" or even "webmasters" just a group effort. I really don't think we are competing at all. *I posted here not to "spam" at all. This is the travel writers forum-- I've used it a lot to read about where people are contributing. I've always appreciated hearing about other sites to write for. If you really want to be a travel writer, you need to write in as many different styles and have as many different clips as possible. I wanted to share a chance to try something different, sorry that didn't come across. Again, sorry for any missunderstanding, Maj --- www.majink.org -home www.wikitravel.org -away |

Philip, I just have to ask-- why would it be OK to post here if we were going to pay you? I mean, I admire and understand your loyalty to BnA, but I thought that was an odd point to make.
I've never really made a distinction between travel writing for profit or pleasure. Otherwise I'd probably just write paid hotel reviews and ads... maj --- www.majink.org -home www.wikitravel.org -away |

of course its ok if I am going to make money
from this - but if I had a penny for every site that asks me to give them articles I would have buckets of cash. I just think its terribly impolite to come here to try and poach bootsnall's writers from under their noses... And, the quality of the writing isnt even that good...for example "The best thing to do in Walnut Creek when one is looking for entertainment is to leave.." err, hello, dont think to mention the number of excellent places to eat there.... shame on you!!! Wow, well I'm sorry you are so overwhelmed with job offers. Please ignore my post and get back to making all that money.
Again, I am in no way "poaching" writers any more than any of the other posts and links to travel sites in this forum. In fact, we do not want BootsNall style writing, that's what BnA is for. Thanks for checkin out our site. We're hoping more people will also find sentences that bug them, old information, and incomplete guides-- and that they will go ahead and edit the text, update the info, and add some content. Thanks again, Maj ps-- Where the heck is there to eat in Walnut Creek? --- www.majink.org -home www.wikitravel.org -away |
