I've put together a decent size portfolio of work now, all published for free, and now i'm about to write some query letters to magazines.

But is it best to include all my clippings or just the best pieces? Is it quantity or quality that counts when it comes to getting comissions?

just the best and most prestigious

preferably something along the lines of what you are pitching

I'm guessing that more than 5 is too many, you can always say, more available upon request...?

Less is definitely more. I recently went to a travelwriting talk and the editors were unanimous about on-line publications -- its a no-no. So send newspaper/mag clips only. Even the lowliest local rag is held in higher esteem than any (non-paying) webzine.

I'm not pleased about this. But at least one of the panel said he is always willing to take a look at a piece even if the writer has no clips. Just don't mention clips if you haven't any Wink
