Holds PhD in Packing

Hi Everyone,
A group of us are backpacking Europe in May 2004, my sister and I have done this before but the other 2 havent so we feel we have to be the guides. I have never done the Rhine Falls area in Germany before and we will be coming from Munich I think...so my quesetion is what city am I shooting for by train to get us there. All of the maps we have looked at have been pretty small and dont show much city action going on. Is it a real touristy area or just a bunch of small villages?? Also, how are there accomadations, easy or hard to find, something I should try to reserve ahead?? Any suggestions would be helpful
Thanks!!!

If I'm not completely mistaken, then the Rheinfalls are on Swiss territory. The closest 'city' is Schaffhausen - it's not too big a place, but you'll finde some places to hang out. I can imagine though, that places to sleep can get expensive - as the demand is probably quite high so close around the falls. Your other and probably better option is to stay in Zurich. There you'll find relatively cheap places to stay, it's a moderate train ride away (1h) and you'll have plenty to do when hanging in Zurich.

Hope it helps.

The Rheinfalls are indeed Swiss, as are another of Europes most famous waterfalls, the Reichenbach Falls. W/regards to the latter, Becky, if you’re interested - and have time - you can catch a train from Zurich to Bern, then head south-east by bus to Meiringen (which also gave the world meringue). Oh, and if you happen to be at the falls on the 4th of May, you'll see hordes of Holmes admirers, who descend on the place each year.

With regards to your mentioning inadequate maps, MultiMap carries extremely detailed and comprehensive maps of most of Europe, together with a host of other information. You may also find the Rough Guide to Switzerland helpful.

It's always astonishing, if foreigners know Switzerland better than I do. I guess, it's the attraction of the unknown, the disattraction of the know respectively, hu?

Yes, elAdi. Yes it is. Roll Eyes

Back on the topic at hand, you should find the two links of use, Becky, or, if not, I'm sure elAdi will be able to give you his opinion as to the area.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the good information...sorry I didn't realize it was in Switzerland myself until just the other day when I was researching it my self on the internet...anyways, like I said I had a crappy map before.

Also, we will also consider staying in Zurich instead of the Rhine Falls area.

Thanks again!
