What is everyone using to blog their trips? I'm using wordpress at the moment, but a lot of the plugins that I try to install never seem to work. What are your opinions on blogs, seeing as most of you have awesome ones.

Guess it depends on how you want to do it.

If you're prepared to host yourself and manage things like security updates on the road then it has to be wordpress (which is what I use).

If you just want somewhere to be able to have a journal without the hastle then the google owned blogger would be the obvious first choice, but to stay with a travel community then the BootsnAll blogs which are essentially wordpress blogs are a good choice too.

The wordpress producers also all have a free hosted option too which although quite new is coming along well.

I'm avoiding links - not sure what the policy on them is as blogs are offered here Smile

Yah after I posted that I was looking through the bootsnall blogs which are well layed out, and have clean templates.

I was thinking of going with blogger but wordpress just seems to have more add ons and ability to customize.

So I guess for now I am going to stick with wordpress. What security updates where you refering to though?

Nothing specific, but from time to time, as will all software, expolits are discovered which can sometimes mean that your website/server is open to abuse by hackers. These exploits will normally get patched, but it means you need to be able to update your version if you want to stay secure.

A couple of days back version 2.0.3 of wordpress was released, including a few bug fixes and minor security enhancments. Would you want to update on the road. Would be really easy, but still something to think about...

With Blogger, or the blogs here that's all taken care of for you Smile

Oh ok I get what you are saying. Thanks for the helpful info! I just started up my travel blog now and dropped my first post in it. I stuck with wordpress, it seems to be the most feature full option out there.

check it out if you have the time www.bloggingabroad.com/blog

I use Movable Type, but it may more difficult to set up than Wordpress. I do know it's very customizable, and easy to use once you are up and running.

Has anyone used .mac for a blog? I just started one on wordpress for our slow trip around the world with our 5yo ,but I am a computer dummy ,so I can see it will take me forever.

I like the community here ,but I picked wordpress because of its reputation and because I want to be independent.I am hesitant to join any community because I want as much freedom with a combined website & weblog that I can get for our epic years long odyssey.Theres a lot that I have learned that I want to share with other families interested in this as well as some schools that are interested in folowing our journey as an educational opportunity for all the kids.I also want to leave the opportunity open for making some money from our website/blog so want control over that.

I probably could manage to do something real simple on wordpress, but I have bigger ambitions than my abilities and the .mac format seems to be easier to work.

I can't find any info about it tho.I am strongly thinking of restarting it there ( and maybe later jump to wordpress again when I am more savvy and experienced.) I have 23 days to take off and I can't spend all day trying to get wordpress to do what I want.

I hope someone here knows something about .mac and can give me some feedback. Thanks in advance!

I use wordpress with K2: http://getk2.com/

Techincally it's a theme, but it adds a lot of functionality while still remaining fully customizable.

Definitely Wordpress.

With themes support your blog can look like anything you want.

Example would be my My Camino de Santiago Camino de Santiago blog.

For free blogs nothing can beat Blogspot by Google http://www.blogger.com

I'm glad this subject is going here already.

Owenf, your site looks great! that's what i want Rock Out

I am about to start a rtw trip and looking for the best site to put my blog on. I have a nicely developed myspace page but the blogging tool kinda bugs me and i would hate to be using it daily.

And so far I have not taken to the wordpress here at bootsnall. But I just realized part of that problem... I'm using Safari (on a Mac) and the toolbars weren't showing up properly. I think it's java that's the problem, very similar problem happens on myspace too.

Works fine on Firefox for you Mac users.

I will check out blogger as well.
Thanks.

I use blogger and for the most part am happy with it. There are a few things that frustrate me on occasion:

1. The upload a photo feature goes on hiatus.
2. Paragraphs are often smushed together.

One tip if you decide to go with blogger. Write your post in a word processor and then copy it to the blog page. If you don't and the blog has trouble posting you could lose your entire post - very frustrating.

I just updated from blogger to blogger beta so hopefully most of these small frustrations will go away. One cool new feature on beta is the use of categories.

I currently use Quickblog, which came free (although I see it's now $2.99/mo) when I registered my domain at godaddy.com...
It's not bad, but I find it sometimes takes a while to upload photos. On the upside, it worked like a charm while I was travelling in China this summer - no firewall issues whatsoever, even in places where I couldn't access Blogger sites or hotmail.
