Hi All,
In case you didn't already know, I'm accepting submissions for the sequel to Sand in My Bra and Other Misadventures: Funny Women Write from the Road. It is tentatively called Whose Panties Are These?Sand Sand did great this year. It was on four bestseller lists and won a Grand Prize from the North American Travel Journalist Assoc. I need true stories. Shorter is better. Deadline is 12/31/03 and I'll give a week on that. You can read the full Travelers' Tales guidelines on our "Submit a Story" page.We pay $100 plus a copy of the book and 50% all TT titles for life. Inside scoop? No whining. Be able to laugh at yourself. And test the story out by reading it aloud to your friends before you submit. If they laugh outloud several times throughout the piece, then that will give you a better chance. While we do include some grinners, I prefer gutbusters. When you're ready to turn it in, please send it to submit@travelerstales.comand not me. We need it to go through them for tracking. Don't worry, I'll get it. Or you can email me a very short note to say you turned it in and I should watch out for it. Jen Leo Written Road: www.jenleo.com/blog |

I don't intend to be mean but... $100?
That seems awfully low. _____________________ [Still Wandering] [Halcyon Climbing] |

Yeah, I know, Markus. That's why I put it right in the front so people would know.
It's not much, but the books are also not making a lot of money. It's what the house can afford. Other publishing houses are doing the same for anthologies and some are paying less. Most of the people that contribute to Travelers' Tales do so because 1) they love the quality of the series, or 2) because it's a great opportunity to build their name. We try to include big name authors in the mix, and it's great to see your story in the same collection as Tim Cahill, Pico Iyer, Paul Theroux, Jan Morris, or others. Jen, thanks for the info. I forwarded it to some of my female writer friends who could use the name-building.

Oh, the joys of seeing one's name in print, espcially in such a swell book. Good luck fellow travellers - unfo I have not been travelling of late, so sigh, will be unable to contribute.
Have great holidays everyone |

Expats have more fun |
Again. Nothing funny ever happens to me!
How about a "Gosh, that was a fun trip!" book, where women recount normal travel experiences in a non funny yet interesting way? I would so submit then! Just another travel addict trying to get Out of dodge... |

Dusty / Delara
I would love to see both of your names in this new book (along side Laurie's....sly dig at Jen Leo here). Some of the stories in the last book were excellent, some were, er, just a little bit less funny and a fair few of them were written about about pretty mundane situations so Delara I just know you could spice it up a little (maybe a story about your Japanese work mates??). dusty ...pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee submit something as I really really want to see you in print ( i have a feeling it would be awesome....) Hell, if my surgeon slips in a few weeks I might end up submitting myself... Philip p.s Jen I have framed my copy - well, the intro page anyway.... |

Yeah, variety is the name of the game with anthologies. What makes one person laugh, doesn't necessarily make another person laugh. And when you work with a publishing house, there are executive editors that have their say as well. But the beauty of anthologies is that if you don't like one, it's short. You can just skip to the next one and see if that one jives.
As for submitting to women's books in general, Travelers' Tales does one at least once a year, and sometimes two. Check out their guidelines: http://www.travelerstales.com/guidelines/ Also, here is the link to the guidelines at Seal Press that publish women's travel. Jen,
Just saw this post and would love to submit something, but the holidays has made life crazy for me (mother-in-law has come to camp out for two weeks!)You said the deadline is 12/31, but you would give a week beyond it? Would certainly appreciate a little extra time! Page |
