Which books do you think belong in any travel writer's library?

Obviously the Writer's Market...

It is important to not just restrict yourself to "travel writing" books; read anything and everything and anything can shape you. Reading only travel books may make your writing too clichéd.

Remember to stock up on the current issue of every magazine/newspaper you are interested in pitching.

I definitely agree with eeyartee. You must read 'across the board' and study the various styles of writing. Eventually you will obtain your own style.

I tend to favour fiction books written by those writers in 3rd World countries because there seems to be a steeped passion in their writings.

An excellent book on travel writing is by L. Peat O'Neil and simply called 'Travel Writing'. For anyone starting off in this crazy business, it is a book I would reccommend.

You Guys...please read RoadTrip Nation. It just came out and it's really eye-opening, especially for our age group

First off, some standard references for writing in genera:

On Writing Well, by William Zinnser

The Elements of Style, by Strunk & White

I'm a fan of stylebooks as well, such as AP or Chicago.

Some other stuff: texts by your favorite authors. The ones you just love to read, the ones whose style make you drool, you name it.

Cheers, Anthony
