Has anyone thought of compiling travel tales/blog posts of members and publishing them into Bootsnall travelogues/books?

Yes. This topic has come up before and has been discussed by the powers that be in Portland, and previous BnA affiliates.
There are a few problems. 1) There is a lot of travel writing out there already. 2) The costs of gather, compiling, making (binding, copies, etc), and then marketing the book would most likely exceed the take. In other words not profitable. 3) If you don't want to assume the cost of doing it, you need to find an editor who would take it, and good luck doing that. Someone tried a few years ago, and it fizzled. 4) For all the "great" writing on BnA there is an awful lot of "not so great writing" here...worst bust trip ever, bad toilet experiences, silly misunderstandings, what I did last summer type stuff. I've only been reading it for 7 years, and there are a few stand outs only. Some interesting stuff to be sure, but not too many that an editor would say: "wow let's print this". At any rate you are welcome to try. Be sure to contact the authors for permission first. -good luck. |

Simply put, there are many more travel story writers than there are travel story buyers.

I never said anything about bosoms but now that you have- I don't believe skobb would be reading such a book 'just for the articles'. --------------------------------------- I don't want to be fearless, I want to be brave. http://www.womenagainstpalin.com/ |

I agree with Slip about the costs, marketing and overall effort involved in publishing a book. 90% of books published in the US fail to reach the 5,000 mark in their first year. I suspect thousands (tens of thousands) of books are released in the US each year. In the UK, 12 authors dominate the fiction market, and they account for 75% of sales.
Perhaps someone here at BNA could provide some insight into the number of hits an article (on average) gets here on BNA in a year. If it is about just wanting to be read (rather than make a shedload of money, which is unrealistic anyway) then getting your stuff published on sites like BNA may go some way to achieving your goal (although I can certainly appreciate why the very idea of getting yourself 'in print' has a certain appeal to many). |
