I always thought I'd want to write the Great Canadian Novel and had no real interest in writing for magazines. Lately I've been getting back into this whole writing thing and have been doing some research on how to spill my brain onto paper (or a computer screen as it were) and actually make a living at it. What's been coming up a lot is freelancing for magazines. A byline here, a feature article there, maybe even an assignment with expenses paid one day. The more I looked into it, the more I realized that I like the magazine medium for conveying my thoughts, ideas and experiences.

So all that throat clearing was so I could pop the question:

Which travel magazines do you think are the tops for a freelance travel writer to score?

Look into Outpost - a Canadian travel magazine that used to have lots and lots of different writers. I haven't read it in ages, though, so I'm not sure if this is still the case.

You must keep in mind that it's a magazine editor's job to keep the magazine's tone and mission. It's your job as a beginning writer to conform to these different tones, while still trying to maintain your style.

Outpost, like the US Outside, leans on travel with environmental and political tones and such.

Blue, focuses on "alternative adventure" travel, unless they are doing a special environmental issue and concentrate on that. In a "regular" edition, the articles in Blue that come to my mind are: the secret underground world of bike messengers in New York City; breaking into the Paris catacombs illegally and wandering all night; scaling bridges illegally and stuff.

The standard consumer magazines are there: Conde Nast Traveler, Travel and Leisure...for higher-end tourism.

Pathfinders is the travel magazine for people of color.

National Geographic Traveler is sort of like Conde Nast, but leans on the cultural and environmental issues.

Men's Journal is about 1/3 travel and leans on the political.

These are just off the top of my head here. Don't forget newspaper travel sections as well.

There's a great list of travel publications at World Hum.

Hope this helps!

I was more wondering what other people thought were the top travel magazines out there. Ie: what you like to read or would love to be published in.

Oh, I'd LOVE to get into "Global Adventure" magazine, based out of the UK. It seems to be the best balance of information and personal narrative.
