I don't know about you, but this seems like it's comparing apples to cheesecake or something.

First of all, it seems odd to compare a regular gig in which you are expected to write a minimum of 12 paragraphs a day to the 2001 rates of "mainstream publications". If you click through to that info, it mostly is talking about what magazines pay freelancers -- are the people who write for Gawker or Wonkette freelancers? Once they have the gig, it's presumably theirs to keep.

It'd be more relevant, I think, to compare Gawker's pay scale to that for daily columnists at small, medium and large newspapers around the country.

Apples to cheesecake...
