Holds PhD in Packing

i got my first paycheck for a travel writing assignment today - and a pretty sizable one at that!

I owe a debt of gratitude to Boots'n'all, as this was the first place that published one my travel stories 3 years ago.

Having those Boots'n'all articles in my portfolio helped me get a couple of assignments in some regional papers. The articles in the papers helped me get some work on some travel guides and the travel guides helped me get some feature articles in magazines - and money in my account!

Boots'n'all didn't just fill my portfolio of course, it helped me gain the confidence to pitch the editors and trust my writing skills, so yeah, I did alot of work for free, but it was all worth it.

So thankyou Boots'n'all (and see update below)

Congrats, that is awesome.

I would love to do the same one day. How does one get started writing articles for BnA?

I really think writing for free to start out is a necessay evil. That's how I got going and then I got paid $5 and then $15 and then $20. You get the idea. The whole snowball thing.

Everett congrats on getting an actuall paycheck. How long did you stare at the check in disbelief?

ChristineHind go here to see the bootsnall writer's guidelines. We'll look forward to reading something from you in the future.

Good luck and keep writing.

Having recently received my first paycheck for a travel guide, i've today got my first article in a UK national newspaper - in the travel section of the Independent on Sunday!

here it is online:
http://travel.independent.co.uk/uk/article1963515.ece

It may only be a small article, but I believe that doing filler articles like these is the best way to get a foot in the door with travel editors - so hopefully i'm on the path to a feature article in a national broadsheet.

Well done Ian. No small achievement getting in the Independent. I see more than a few people on the Net being dismissive of writing for free and for sites like this. So let's just hope we get to see even more successes on BNA like yours.

I've written a load of stuff on BNA and elsewhere on the Net. All done for no payment. I also write for payment for various print publications. However, it was the stuff I've done for free on various websites that has landed me a book publishing contract. It got spotted, the publisher liked my style and the book is due out in 2008. I guess there's a lot to be said for places like BNA that provide an opportunity to showcase your work!
