Expats have more fun

I have been looking at submissions guidelines for a lot of paid/unpaid online journals and the following keeps coming up:

"Send us your very best unpublished work. The only exception is if your work has been published in a PRINT publication."

Now please can someone tell me what this means? If my work has been published online: it is not eligible? What if I sent a story to a competition and they posted all accepted stories online, is that really being published?

Basically, I am thinking of sending along an edited portion of a previous story (mentioned above) and wondering if I am going against the submission guidelines. I do not want to waste their time.

Confused yet?

Just another travel addict getting Out of dodge...

By print they are generally refering to "printed" publications (ie: magazines, newspapers, books)... basically anything that needs a printer... Smile

It sounds to me that online publishing is perfectly acceptable and is not considered print.

Generally print publications that ask for submissions do not mind, if the article has been previously published on a website (you see they do not regard websites as competition, not as yet).

so the requirements differ from case to case.

Er, I may still confused. To me is sounds like the guidelines are saying:

You cannot submit stories, to an online journal, which have already been published online.

BUT

You can submit stories, to an online journal, which have only been published in mag's, newspapers, etc.

Is that anyting like right?

Yes Annette you are right. Big Grin

Cause this submission is for an online journal, the journal would not want anything published online elsewhere, but they would be open to something published in a print medium.

It would be the reverse if the print publication was asking for a submission.
