I am trying to pursue a career in freelance writing. I did not want to limit myself to one specific area, but the prospect of travel writing really excites me. My concern is that I am married and I do realize that freelancing is not something that you have to commit to full time, but I am wondering if there are any travel writers out there either married or in committed relationships that can share their personal experiences with me. Are editors and publishers sympathetic to writers who have familial obligations? Are editors and publishers willing to pay for the travel expenses of a spouse?

Side question: Is anyone familiar with the American Writers and Artists Institute in Florida? They offer online writing courses and I am considering taking one of their travel writing courses.

Freelance is a very cutthroat market. Written Road is a great resource for travel freelancing and also freelancing in general. Because so many people freelance, and so many people are willing to do it cheaply and give up other obligations, editors and publishers are reluctant to pay for you to travel, let alone your spouse. I don't know that Institute, but that's not saying much Smile

In general, assume you are going to pay for everything yourself until you develop a track record. Once you have a bunch of articles under your belt, you may get some freebies IF you can show them an assignment letter. In other words, if they will get something out of the deal, they may put you up, otherwise, forget it.

Having a spouse is no big deal if you have an assignment letter--it's just another person in the room or another meal to serve. They couldn't care less if it''ll result in good press. But you have to prove that it will indeed result in good press.
