Hi all,
This BnA forum is the only place I know of that is frequented by writers and such, so here is my off forum topic question: Is it acceptable for an unpaid proof reader to ask for a credit in a book? I am involved in a technical forum and posted an in depth review of a commercial product. (I rubbished it.) Since then a technical author has contacted me and asked if I would be interested in proof reading a book he is working on. I will probably agree...but am thinking it would boost my geek status if I can get a mention. Do lowly proof readers get such notice? Or am I being selfish? Thanks for your thoughts... I would certainly give proof readers a mention if I ever published a book. I think you should ask for it, after all you'll be spending a lot of valuable time on this I suppose without getting any other reward.

It may depend on the publishers. O'Reilly gives extensive credits to proofreaders, but others may not permit acknowledgements. Technical- and text books are more likely to include credits, but some fiction paperbacks don't even have an author bios (which is very annoying!).

Thanks for the input. I wrote him and he said yes.
