d'oh! I've been meaning to post that I'm going on a book tour to promote my new one, Dirty Sugar Cookies, and I've been meaning to for so long that Philly's over! But if you're in Chicago, Austin, Portland OR, Berkeley or San Fran this week, come say how doodly oodly! Follow Not-The-First-Travis's example and have me smooch your freshly purchased copy!

and any recommendations of cheap eats & don't miss oddities, particularly south of congress area in austin , the mission, and portland's punk rockin' north portland nabe, bring em ON!

I would strongly suggest that you dine at Indus Village in Berkeley.

Well, to shop, Uncommon Objects and Yard Dog on South Congress, or Allen's Boots for awesome footwear. To eat, Guero's Taco Bar, El Sol y La Luna and coffee at Jo's. For Austin music, almost anything at Stubb's, Antone's or the Backyard. Check the Thursday Austin Chronicle for listings. BookPeople for books and Waterloo Records for tunes. The millions of Congress Ave Mexican freetail bats fly out at sunset over Town Lake till about November.

Have fun, Sheila

Thanks, Sheila! i been done and gone and hit many of the spots you mentioned - El Sol Y La Luna, Guero's, Waterloo, Bookpeople, and my kids are now clomping around Brooklyn in some very fine boots from Allen's. Missed the bats. Have to come back for the bats.

And now I must recommend to you: The Box Springs Hogs, a Tom Waits cover band! They were some hot ass 'do, I can tell you that!

i love your town.
