From my experience:

magazine con: looooooong lead time
magazine pro: color pictures and glossy paper!

I haven't actually submitted to any newspapers, but from what I've heard they generally pay very little for travel stories since they receive so many submissions.

Best way to start - websites...Quick and some of them do pay. Of course telling them that you have writting earlier for BNA and sending the url helps.

I've written for both, so here goes.

Magazines
Often pay more, look prettier, are read for longer, are more likely to archive articles on the web for a long time. Are not in AP style and are therefore often freer with language and sentences can be longer.

Newspapers
Shorter lead times, publish more often, sound good on paper (if it's a notable one), reach a lot of people in a hurry, don't pay a lot but pay on time.

I thought this link to Cleo was great. I'm fairly new to writing freelance and am always working at improving. Thanks for this.
