I saw this posted on a travel website and was curious if you think these are "once in a lifetime" trips. What are some better options?

Numbers 3, 7, and 8 are amazing trips, but not the end all, be all experience of a lifetime. Agree? Disagree?

Rank 1 Champagne Flight to the North Pole

2 Travel to Timbuktu (Mali) and Back

3 Sea Kayak the Panama Canal

4 Stay With a Mongolian Family in the Gobi Desert

5 Cage Dive with Great White Sharks in South Africa

6 Camel Caravan Across the Sahara Desert

7 Trek to Mount Everest Base Camp

8 Take a Hot Springs Bath in Iceland

9 Balloon Safari Over the Serengeti (Tanzania)

10 Walk Rainforest Tree Canopies in the Amazon

I did 4 and definitely hope I can do it again.

I went to the Sahara but a few hours on a camel is more than enough for me.

5 just sounds scary.

They all sound great, but I'm sure there are many more just as exciting. I especially like #5 and plan to try that someday. I did the uncaged shark dive in the Bahamas but the sharks were only 6-10 feet reef sharks. I'm sure the great whites would have you for dinner if you weren't in a cage. Smile

Is it me, or does this read like the Michael Palin BBC travel series?

I agree, a trek across the Sahara in a camel doesn't sound like much fun at all. After about an hour and a half on a camel I was ready to get off.

Joey, your wording was so...perfect HeHe

I thought about Cage Diving with sharks in San Diego, but then I read how cold the water is..and the fact you need a 7 mill wetsuit with a hood..shit, I'm not gettin in the water! I'm a wimp when it comes to cold water!

HAH If any of you have ever been to Galveston, TX then you could easily swim with sharks in 10 inches of water. I would be content watching them on tv. as for lifes to do. i think it should not only be memorable to you but have an impact on someone else as well. For ex:
build a school/hospital in Africa
teach english in Cambodia for 3 months
drive a Rickshaw for free for a month in China
and of course more personal stuff like Patagonia and Mt. Kili.

Urban Kitten,

Well, the first 1.5 hour trek on the camel I had to go to the bathroom before I even got on so the entire time I was holding myself. It didn't help that I had a water bottle stuck in the saddle/handle bar thingy so every time we moved I heard water swish around.

On the 2nd 1.5 trek back I had a sore throat and was slowly coming down with the sickness.

Both times I couldn't wait to get off OF the camel. Otherwise it was pretty damn cute.

It's just not very comforatble, and isn't really any faster than walking. Do I did enjoy it more in the Gobi then in the Sahara, but that was because the sand-sliding we did there was so much fun, not the actual camel ride. Oh, and they smell horrible, and it's really hard to get the smell off, especially if the only way of washing available is pouring bottles of water over each other.
