Some would say travel is adventure. Is travelling in a group to the Amazon more adventurous than going to Cleveland by yourself? What kind of adventure are you looking for when you slap down hard cash for an adventure travel tour?

It's all perspective. To me, the Amazon thing is more adventurous than going to Cleveland. Why? Well, Cleveland is too close to home, similar culture, same language. I would beleive that it would be easy for me to get around in Cleveland (although I've never been, so I can't really say..but just insert city X in USA...).

If I slap down hard cash for an adventure travel tour, I am most likely doing something that I would need a guide for -- for example, hiking up a mountain for x number of days. Or something that is adrenaline pumping that I have never done before, such as jumping out of a plane, hanggliding, scuba diving, white water rafting, caving.

Those are the kinds of things I like when it comes to paying for adventure travel tours.

Adventure travel, however, in the way I think of it to be, doesn't need to be expensive. I spent about $5/day in the remote pampas of Argentina on a rock climbing and hiking adventure for a week. This, I did with my boyfriend -- no guide, no nothing. Just a refugio. We brought our own gear, carried it up the sierra. Definitely an adventure.

Now unless there are really neat rock formations in Cleveland to scale...for me, it wouldn't really be an adventure. Wink

Adventure travel is what you define as adventure, which could be in your state - or far away in another country. It's usually an active outdoor activity, with a guide, that challenges you more than showing up at a hotel and relaxing by the pool.
