I just returned from 33 days in Mexico. I did this entire surf trip on the busses from Houston where I live and I had a blast. I covered a good bit of the country but I still am not satisfied with trip. Im extreamly interested in possibly one day doing a bicycle trip, and I have seen racks to mount surfboards, but does this seem completely insane? I have read logs of people heading south, so Im not asking in that sense, but more in the baggage sense. I guess another option would be a nice dirtbike? As much as my soul loves surfing, sometimes the baggage really limits your travelling abilities. inputs pleaase!!!

Hey TX,

I'm planning on a bicycle trip through Central and South America within a month or two. I've never done any kind of bike riding and have no clue what I'm doing, but I've been reading some stuff. "They" say it's not the mountains and hills that kill you, but the wind. So with that in mind it may be difficult to cruiz around with a big board strapped to your bike. I guess you could always try to make a sail out of it! Wink

Let us know what kind of plans you end up making. Maybe I'll see you out there...

yea i can imagine the wind would be bad. im very experienced on a bike as i rode bmx (liek street and ramps) for close to 6 years when i was a little younger. i still pull the bike out every once in a while and get a good ride in and i have to say i havent lost my skills that much. but anyways, luckily my boards i ride are all short boards, 6ft - 6'6", and we have travel bags we throw them in. The bad thing, this will severly unbalance the bike and i will extert a great amount of energy trying to stabilize and hold myself up. I have also considered the option of a trailer. hrmm. good luck on your ride, and start practicing and get comfrotable with very dangerous situations. i actually enjoy riding out through traffic and all in the cars, and i do this on a 20" bmx bike hahaaha.

Have you thought of bringing a smaller boogie board, or making/buying a trailer where the board is horizonal, not acting like a huge sail? I can see you being toppled over very easily on a bike with a strong wind.

Maybe a motorcycle with a trailer might really be the best idea...
