Hi everyone

I was watching the box the other night and a program came on 'The Top 10 Adventure Holidays'....The Inca Trail came in at No.1

I was delighted with this as I will be doing it later on next year...although I understand it is quite touristy now so was surprised it came in No 1.

Does anyone agree with this? If not then let me know what you consider to be the ultimate adventure holiday...giving reasons if you like too.

I would not agree that the Inca Trail is #1. It is very popular nowadays - I did it last year.

I think for a 'mainstream' adventure holiday, I'd say it's up there. It's definitely worth doing though, I liked it. But for me, I find more adventure (top 10-wise) off the beaten path with the unexpected.

I don't think I would agree that the Inca Trail is the best adventure holiday.

Considering you end at Machu Pichu it is though IMHO probably the best cultural trek around and well worth doing. Now as far as just trekking is concerned, it's probably within the Top 10. And, for adventure travel, I couldn't put it in the Top 10 at all.

I feel like I have yet to list a #1 because I haven't experienced it yet.

But out of the things I have done..here are a few of my favorites:

- riding in the back of a truck with wooden slats from Chugchilan to Laguna Quilotoa, hiking from Laguna Quilotoa back to Chugchilan. You can read about it here

- taking a taxi randomly from Tilcara north to a place called Angosto del Perchel to find rumored thermal waters (not knowing where they were). We got dropped off, literally, in the middle of nowhere on the main route. Our taxi driver asked a few locals, and they said that the hike to the springs was 6 hours round trip. We didn't have the time to do that, so instead we hiked back to Tilcara along the irrigation canal used by the farmers. Long story short, we met a few locals (native/indigenous) who rarely encounter foreigners, a boy who has to work in his parents farmland and walk a long way to school, dogs that would have killed us...etc...to get back to Tilcara. Can read a little more here

- taking a bus randomly from Tilcara north to a place called Volcan Yacoraite. Another place -- dropped off in the middle of nowhere. We talked to a few locals getting off the bus as well, and they pointed us in the direction to go to get to the volcano. Along the way, we encountered a lady on horseback in traditional dress who was knitting. She asked us if we were going to the school. She said that every once in a while, people bring supplies to the school. We went in search of the school and volcano, but ran out of time and had to turn around after hours of hiking.

I love the random adventures or misadventures. They're so unique and stick out in my mind. I also like doing the touristy adventures. But I consider the random ones the best.

Sea Kayak – Glacier Bay
River running – Zambezi

Boulder - Bishop
Ice climb – Ouray
