I just watched this insane base jump video.

Has anyone here done anything like this?
I dont know if I would ever do something like this, but I am very curious as to some of the details, what the rush is like, or any stories.

I've never done it, probably wouldn't..because I know a guy who did it, busted one of his legs up so badly upon landing, and had to have surgery/pins etc. And it's not like he's totally clueless about stuff; it was just one of those fluke things.

Yeah I supose that when you jump off a cliff, you gotta kinda be prepared for some possible repercussions.

He's a thrill-seeker, but yeah, I think that experience put a damper on that tendency.

Many years ago, I wanted to try out base jumping. Now, I am not so crazy, so I don't think I'll do it. I've already been sky diving, and that's the only kind of parachute thrill I think I'll have! Razz

I saw a parachute once when I went on to the national guard base when I was in JROTC,...that is the closest I will ever come to sky-diving or base-jumping.

I haven't base jumped but I have been skydiving twice. It is an experience that I will never forget. My first jump was a static line. where your rip cord pulls automatically as it is atached to the plane. This was from 3500'. My second jump was an accelerated freefall from 15,200'. I jumped with two instructers at my side. Your learn a lot about yourself when they open the door of a plane at 15,000 ft and say it is time to jump.

My only fear is that I would learn that I am a coward when I back out at the last minute.

To start BASEjupming you have to do a fair bit of freefall skydiving first. Take a look on This website for more information. It's a UK based site but gives you an idea of what experience you need. They recommend about 250 skydives before thinking about BASEjumping, but it's possible to start earlier; it depends on your ability.

There is nothing quite like throwing yourself off a cliff, or building. An interesting film to watch on this topic is BASEclimb.
