How does one get into white water kayaking? It does not seem as easy as taking a scuba diving or climbing coarse. I have done a lot of lake kayaking would it be ok to just jump in some rapids and go?

I know in Austin, you can take courses...more technical than regular touring kayaking. I haven't been white water kayaking yet (a bit chicken for that) but you have to learn how to roll your kayak...very important for white water kayaking!!!

Check to see if there are any recreational courses taught at a college (non credit), or recreation center near you. You can at least get the basics...or try and hook up with some white water kayakers who will show you the ropes (for a fee?).

It's something I'm quite keen to get into aswell. I think the best thing you can do is just google kayak courses in your area and see what you come up with.

Best one I found near me was www.glenmorelodge.org.uk
Which might be a bit out of your way but I'm sure you can find something closer to home.

Good luck.
