Hi All
I am interested in your thoughts on some of the better countries for active holidays - meaning mountaineering, rafting, watersports, cycling.

The first few places that come into mind are

Nepal, Costa Rica, Tanzania.

Any thoughts?

Donovan

It's my favourite country in Europe for hiking. The High Tatras are the best of course, but there's other areas as well, Slovensky Raj, Low Tatras, in fact most of the country. It's well-developed (marked trails, good maps, mountain huts, reliable mountain rescue services, etc.), but not too touristy (except for the Tatras in july-august, but even then you can get away from the crowds if you take the more challenging trails). And I guess it's good for mountain-biking and skiing as well, though I'm not really into either of those.

New Zealand - lots of activities to do. Plus, the Kiwis love to invent new adventure/adrenaline activities, like zorbing.

Peru - for great mountaineering opps. Plus other activities.

I haven't been there (aside from the airport), but I have to think that Switzerland is a good country for going outdoors, what with the alps and all.

Not to be some Scandinavian tout, but Norway is pretty incredible for the outdoors. The hiking trail network is very extensive, with public cabins all over the mountains, and there's plenty of skiing, climbing, hiking, mountain biking, rafting, etc.

The US probably has to be somewhere on that list. Maybe it doesn't have one area that stands above the others, but as big as it is, there's very little that can't be enjoyed somewhere in the country.

One of the bonuses of living on the edge is that the view is more spectacular and your experiences more extreme. You never know what is at the bottom, find out!

Don't forget BC, Canada. There's heaps of adventure activities to do around the Lower Mainland/Vancouver Island area (including skydiving, skiing, ocean kayaking, sailing, diving, mountaineering, etc).

Best skydiving location is the USA.
