Hi all,

Off to Jeffery's Bay next month and fancy learning to kite surf. No experience with either element (kite or surf), am I deluding myself, should I learn to surf first?

Any advice welcome, not looking for an easy life, dont mind hitting the deck more than a few times.

Also anyone know any decent places in the uk to practise on return?

I'm more of a windsurfer, but a lot of my friends got into kitesurfing from windsurfing. None of them knew how to surf previously. They all said it was hard at first, but most adventure sports are, and then they were fine.
I'd say you'd be ok learning kitesurfing from scratch.
And there are a few places in Ireland to kitesurf so there should definitely be some places in England.

I'd recommend taking lessons. I did 3 days of lessons, just working with the kite alone (didn't get to the boarding part). The kite is very powerful, and you can easily injure yourself or someone else. I sprained my toe twice as the kite lurched me forward (toe dug into the sand and bent) because it was out of control (I didn't know how to control it). There's a lot of safety things to learn, which are important if you get stranded out far from the shore and whatnot. The lessons I did were great...I think if I had another day, I would have gotten up on the board.

You must have gone and come back by now (o.k maybe not come back yet) but if you have here is a great list of places around the world for kite surfing, u.k included of course
