Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to read this, my first post.

So for the past few months, in my last year of high school, I decided what better way to avoid college than to go backpacking for 6 months? My friends all agreed. But time, character, and costs has widdled down the number going on this trip to one- me. And I'm terrified. And excited.

So I begin in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Nov. 20. To get used to the area, I've decided to spend my first three weeks doing volunteer work, I'm already signed up.

But, I have so many questions...But now that I finally have a forum to ask them, I can only remember a couple. Hopefully, I'll post more as I remember. Pressure.

I never realized it was so expensive! With visas, shots, a ticket, a nice pack, etc, it seems I'll arrive with very little money. I hesitate to ask this because it may sound stupid. But is it possible to live there that long (and do some tourist things like a safarii or Kil. trek) on a budget of roughly 3,000?

...Maybe I need more work Slap

Is it possible to bus or train to Egypt from Uganda?

If anyone's in Tanzania from November 20 to mid-January, Rwanda in February, or Uganda/Egypt in Mar-May and wants to cut costs in half (is it possible?) I'd be more than happy to consider the idea of travel buddies.

Thanks alot.

Don't quote me on this, but I think this may be better suited in the correct regional board - this board (that you've posted on) is for Adventure Travel threads, i.e. climbing, sky diving and mountaineering.

Perhaps one of the mods will be along to move this for you, as you will get a better response if it's in the right section.

hey amwalker,

when you are searching travel related opportunities and prices on the internet you are likely to see frighteningly high prices. on the ground reallity tends to be lot better. That said in Tanzania we were using a company called good earth (http://www.goodearthtours.com). They were very good and just about as inexpensive as it gets. Later we heard (not from them) that part of their money goes towars helping community projects in the village where they are from.

Excellent idea about the volunteer work!

Have a great trip!
