Hey guys, I have these places planned for January. Eric - take a look and see if they fit for you. Prices are approximate. Heathbar - Are these good options?

  • Cairo - Mayfair ($14, Zamalek). alt: Hotel Longchamps ($48 - I hope I can budget for this one ... but probably not!)

  • Abu Simbel - Eskaleh (@ $24 ?). alt: Abu Simbel Touristic Village

  • Aswan - Keylany ($12)

  • Luxor - Nefertiti ($9, Luxor). alt: Senmut ($16, el Ramlah)

  • Kharga - ?
  • Dakhla - al Qasr Guesthouse
  • Farafra - Badawiyya (or just arrange trek with them)

I second Keylany, while it is def a budget place, it's pretty clean and the staff is nice. There's an internet cafe around the corner.

    Hi,

I stayed in the Happyton in Downtown Cairo which I thought was as greta place to stay as it was way out of ht etourist trap and wasnt far from teh underground, sadly can't remember the prices although you will be able to find it online.

Happy land in Luxor was basic but comfortable I seem to remember.

Little Garden in Luxor was great-- very clean--staff was very helpful in arranging tours.

Keylany in Aswan was clean and I had the best Turkish coffee of my trip at the rooftop cafe there.

I stayed at Let Me Inn in Cairo which I can highly recommend, except for lack of a/c which in August was a bit of a problem but I suspect not much the rest of the year.

I also stayed at the old Sphynx in Dahab (different than the new Sphynx) and a place in Luxor that unfortunately I can't remember the name of. I also did a 2-day cruise on the M/S Renaissance from Aswan to Luxor. Details are in my blog.

Luxor: Gezira Gardens was awesome. It's on the west bank, a cheap felucca ride across the Nile from all the craziness and touts of the East Bank. We shared a 2BR, 2Bath apartment for about $50 total, drank cheap Stella beer, and spent relaxing hours on their roof garden. When I got sick (from another restaurant, not theirs!) they took my husband on a moped to the pharmacy and helped tell the Arabic-speaking employee what he needed.

Does anyone have any second choices for Aswan? I thought I was booked at Keylany, but I wasn't & now it's full (according to the booking site).

The other budget places all sound pretty skanky. There must be something cool & hip & affordable, right?

I thought I had it in my notes, but now I can't find it. I stayed in what I *think* was the "Nile Hotel" (not the Nile River Hotel or any other similar combination). It did overlook the nile and so was on the main road but it was away from the main center of town. it was much closer to the new museum. The rooms were clean, the a/c very cold, and there was a nile view. However the restaurant SUCKED.

Look for a hostel or hotel in the main shopping area and I think you'll do better.

I stayed at Hotel/Hostel Dahab in Cairo. Its a great place, super cheap and the location is central. Its about $5/night for a basic single room with shared bathrooms. Its on a beautiful rooftop with cheap internet and shisha.

I have to confess that 90% of my decision to book at the Let Me Inn in Cairo was because of the witty name! Cracking Up

I just booked the hostel in Dahab as well and it seems great. I think it's called the Dahab Dorms. I'm so looking forward to this!
