There was a nice article about Syria in today's Travel section of the New York Times. After reading it, I've moved it near the top of my travel list.

Great choice. Syria is a wonderful country. We didn't enjoy it quite as much as Turkey, but it was definitely a close runner up. Damascus in particular is little short of incredible.
I've also noticed that most of my best pictures come from Syria. I hope you don't mind...

Oh wow, those are beautiful! Yeah, it's definitely on my list - maybe next time, if I can swing a longer trip, I can get to both Turkey and Syria.

That was a great article. Sometimes I need to be reminded of the great things I've experienced. Syria was definitely a fantastic place, and I think would be even better when a traveller is not already weary and worn.
The souqs are fantastic, though I would say that in terms of authenticity, the one in Damascus is better - we were less 'touted' there, and there were much more authentic wares there than in Aleppo - more touristy stuff in Aleppo, and we were touted more there. That said, the architecture of the Aleppo souq is not to be missed - much of it is original, dating back several centuries, or millennia. Both are worth seeing, but if you are wanting to buy local, traditional, authentic wares, do so in Damascus. I regret not doing so myself. Also, I'm disappointed that Crac de Chevalier wasn't covered - definitely one of the highlights of a visit to Syria. A magnificent piece of architecture, indeed. Interesting insight into club and after-dark culture. Not something we really picked up on when we were there, but then again, it's not something we are generally into, so we wouldn't have been looking for it. We did, however, see part of this sub-culture at a couple of restaurants, wearing clothing that some Westerners wouldn't feel comfortable wearing. That was certainly surprising. Sigh. Thanks for the memories. |

I lived in Damascus for six months last year (2006) and loved it. The people were great, the food, the places, the experiences are all things I will not forget in a long time.
