Has anyone here ever lived in Kuwait City? I'm thinking about moving there for the next few years and would like a little unbiased opinion. I would be working at a school, local, not American. But I'd be living in their housing. I'm a single gal who's pretty indpendent and likes to "entertain at home". I just have a feeling that my autonomy would be really limited here. Or that I'd have to wade in the pool of the thousands of other Americans there which I wouldn't be into.
Anyone with any experioences they'd like to share?>

I lived in Kuwait a few years ago. It was my first time in the Middle East, and I was quite taken aback with the attitudes of the people. I ended up moving to Qatar less than a year later at which time I really started to interact with the locals. They at times may seem rude or hostile, but they will turn quickly into smiles and laughter. Granted like anywhere there are bad people, but for the most part they are just as friendly if not more so than most Americans. There are plenty of nationalities to hang out with in Kuwait. Since there is no drinking (legally at least) in Kuwait you will have to go out and find make your own fun. Yes house parties are big deal in the region, many fond memories of late night get tog ethers. Some of my best friends in the region are teachers and they love what they do. Although I don't think I have ever met an American teacher come to think of it.

Also it is very easy to travel in the region, Emirates used to be the best to fly with. However Qatar Airways, Gulf Air and even Kuwait's airline have really expanded. Worse case scenario you will have to fly out of Dubai to get to places. Dubai is a fantastic city to visit, lots to do there.

Kuwait is not bad, it is like anywhere, if you make the effort it can be fantastic!

i lived in Kuwait for 2 years, and I hated every day of it, and am a guy. the place sucks, the people suck even more, and the locals are the worst people i have ever dealt with in my whole life.

Its a great place to save money, and is easily traveled from to other directions.

i just hated the attitude towards foreigners, the arrogance of the locals, the way they drive, their legal system that is screwed up, their sense of superiority over anyone...

just my 2 cents.

oh and as a gal, get ready to be stared at among various other negative attitudes towards women.
