Anyone know what public transport between Egyptian cities is like? I'm specifically interested in overland between Cairo and Hurghada and am open to taking the scenic route, although time is an issue.

According to a site located by my mate Mr Google there's a couple of companies running daily trips, one called Super Jet and it's about 370 km and 5 hrs.

Hi Stoo,

There are some options for travel between cities. The bus is OK, has A/C. (like superjet). then there are microbuses which leave when they're full. these are the two options available between hurghada and other cities.
The trip from cairo to Hurghada is easy. there is only 1 route through the arabian desert (which is east of the nile), so theres no choice.

cities in the delta and the nile valley are (almost always) served by train, which is usually faster and more comfortable than the other two options.

googlenorth: thanks for your standard suggestion.

Rogier: cool. are there any interesting stops along the way? like would it be worth it to stop off in city X for a day and continue on the next day?

I'm instinctively not interested in spending time in Cairo, but that is probably misplaced. I'm possibly headed out to Hurghada in the next few weeks for a short trip and am considering a little side trip.
