I'm about to start planning a month's travel around North Africa and Jordan. I'm likely to be traveling as a single so am interested in anyone's views on good tour companies for these three, either together or separate tours.

Howdy!
Of the three I've only ever been to Jordan, so can't offer tons of advice. I'd suggest that for there, especially if you're just going to Petra, you'll be able to manage fine going independently.

The PRIMARY reason for my writing was just to express my extreme jealousy at your going to Libya. Lucky lady Smile

Are you looking for a single tour to arrange the whole thing? If so, then you'll probably have to talk to a travel agent (try to find someone who specializes in small group adventures, or check out BnA's offerings). Throughout the middle east, we ran into Imaginative Traveller groups a few times, (they were very helpful in guiding us through the ferry terminal at Nuweiba, which is kind of a disaster), but they don't do Libya. Explore also does small group tours in the area, including Libya, but I don't think they have any that tie together Libya to Jordan, and I'm not aware of anyone who does.

Really, the need for a pre-booked tour is minimal. I haven't been to Libya (want to go, though), but don't imagine it will be much trouble (I find the worst countries to travel in are the ones where tourism is a dominant industry). Jordan is very easy to do independantly. In Egypt, there's people everywhere that want to sell you a package once you arrive, and it's probably not a bad idea, just to avoid having to bargain for every little thing...you could probably do it cheaper alone, but the savings would be minimal (we paid just over $300 for 3 weeks).
