Hi All,

I know it's been asked, but I'm looking for costs relevant to the last year or so for my estimates.

I'm looking to put together a daily budget (staying at budget hostels, mostly street food, and keeping it low but doing attractions as they come)

Turkey
Syria
Jordan
Israel
Egypt
UAE
Iran

Anything you all could provide would be so much appreciated.

Is Turkey more like europe in terms of cost? I plan to travel overland and I'm still trying to determine the exact route. thanks!
Kelli

I mostly eat in restaurants, so I have difficulty answering with any exact numbers for people who plan on mostly street food. Even with restaurants (including some fancy ones), and several splurge type of things (hiring a driver for a day, nicer hotel for a few nights, etc.) we spent 37.50 per person per day in Syria. Egypt is similarly cheap, though the entrance fees add up, and restaurants in particular are pricier (since they cater more to foreigners). Actually, Syrian entrance fees can add up, too, but we had ISIC cards, and the student prices were so cheap as to have no impact on the budget. Normal foreigner prices are usually in the $5-$7 per site range.

So, coming from there, Turkey was a price shock, but in reality it's about half the price of western Europe - more or less in line with Jordan and eastern Europe. Our spending in Turkey was about $50 per person per day. We could have done it a little cheaper, but we were watching our money there fairly closely.

This was about 2 years ago (and I've reported the numbers in CAD here, which is now the same as USD, but was worth about 20% less at the time).
