I'm going to be starting in Lebanon and then making my way to Jordan. I was looking at a map and see that this looks like it's only possible by either going through Syria or Israel. I'm sure you aren't allowed to cross the border into Israel. Will I need to get a Syria visa to make the Lebanon to Jordan trip?

Also, are there buses that go to Jordan from Lebanon?

Thanks!

Yes, just as a matter of geography, you do have to go through Syria, unless you fly, since the Israeli border is closed. In case you weren't aware, there is some tension between Lebanon and Syria at the moment, so crossing that border could also pose a challenge.

Couldn't tell you about buses though, I'm afraid.

Several busses leave from Beirut daily headed for Damascus. It is about 115km which makes a journey time of about 5 hours. Seat61 takes care of the details from there. I find that he is allways current on route changes due to political tensions.

No worries crossing the Leb-Syrian border and you will be able to get your Syrian visa at the border, although it might cost you depending on your nationality (Brit expensive, Japanese cheep trnasit visa available) There actually direct taxis from Leb to Jordan via both borders but If you can spend some time in Syria, by far the best Levant country to travel in for us. Cheep, cheeful and lots of interesting sites to see.

Not 100% on the bus service and not too keen to try it either. However, we often use the taxi service out of Damascus to get to Lebanon (US$50)and it goes to Jordan too.
European nations are finding visa restrictions on the Syrian border at the moment due to politics and need to have one before they arrive.

There are some great sights in Syria too so dont be in too much of a rush through Smile

Taxi is definitely the way to go from Beirut to Damascus. I think my friend and I each paid around $5-10 each though. And then from Damascus we took another taxi to Amman.

Syria really is worth at least a few days. And we found the people to some of the nicest (much better experiences than in Egypt, Jordan and even Turkey)
