Holds PhD in Packing

Hello, going to Morocco in August. I will be in Marrakech for a while and I would like to take 2 or 3 day trip to Sahara. I know already it's challenging in August because of the temperatures. The other thing is I'm traveling alone. Now.. I really hate this cute'n'all safe tours you can book on the web for hell lot of money. Did anyone travelled to Marrakech and hired a guide/camel/jeep(I don't drive. Is it easy?
Thanx

we didn't go from marrakech, but we took a bus from fez to a town called rissani, hitched in a 4x4 to the edge of the desert to a kind of camp (the guy we hitched with knew about it...he offered to take us for nothing if we talked to the guy at the camp about going into desert)...there we first had tea and then negotiated with the guys and hired them to take us into the desert for about 3 days. you shouldn't have a problem. we played it all by ear and it worked out...not sure about other people's experiences. if you want more info on who we hired, i think i still have their information somewhere...i can look if you need...

i don't think you necessarily need to go to fez to get to the sahara...there are a few places in the moroccan sahara that are known for the spectacular dunes...the area near the town of rissani is one of them...the thing to do is to go to a town near that part of the desert...from fez we had to take a 13 hour bus ride overnight to get ther...so going to fez will not get you any closer (though fez in and of itself is pretty spectaculat...unfortunately, i didn't get down to marrakech, though i'll probably be back).

I was in Marrakesh in August 2002. Took a two-day Sahara tour. Heat is a major issue. Make sure you bring lots of water/sunblock as temps will be close to 40C. The tour I took departed from the Hotel Ali, located in the Medina. Definitely worth while with spectacular (if not terrifying) views while driving through the High Atlas. Definitely not for the faint of heart.
