I am planning to be in Egypt for only about 9 days and would like to see a lot. However, most tour companies do not seem to have tours that fit with my dates. Has anyone just flown to Cairo and then booked a tour of Egypt there? It it cheaper and is it safe? Many thanks! Also any tour recommendations are appreciated.

I say just go to Cairo. Everyone there sells tours, and they're all pretty much the same. It'll be set up with public transit between cities, and someone will meet you when you arrive. We had no real problems with that, though the system broke down in our last stop, Dahab, where no one met our bus...not a big loss, though, since the deal had only included one night's accomodation there. I don't think that's a common event, though - we arrived the morning after the main strip in Dahab was bombed, so I think things were just kind of chaotic at the time.

It feels kind of dodgy at times, but it's cheap, and I don't see there being any trouble safety-wise.
