What are you afraid of, the PKK? If so, don't worry. There have been no reports of tourists being touched that I have heard on this board, or from my friend in Turkey right now.
The action is at the immediate border with Iraq, so unless you have a reason to go into Iraq, don't go there. |

You'll probably have a better idea of the situation from within Turkey than we would from here. The SE has had warnings against it for years, but we met a few people while we were in the country that had come from there and had a great time. If I recall correctly, when the PKK has targeted foreigners, its been foreigners in more heavily travelled parts of the country anyway.
Best course of action, I think, is to head slowly eastwards. If you haven't been to Cappadoccia yet...go. That seems to be the major crossover point between western tourists and more adventurous folks with trips to the east, so you'll probably be able to get first hand information there. |

I met a fair number of PKK sympathizers, and never felt threatened. Of course, I wasn't near the border areas. PKK has done some bombings in the past, but it's rare, and to my knowledge they never targeted foreigners for kidnapping or other bad things.
Antalya has a large Kurdish population, along with other Turkish minorities, and they'd probably be your best source of current information. Michael C |
