Just curious, having read that it may be possible, has any US passport holder gotten a Syrian tourist visa while passing through Ankara in the last year? Greatly appreciate any advice!

Don't count on it. Syria, at least in theory, only issues visas from embassies or consulates in your home country. Some people get lucky at the border, many do not. Haven't heard of anyone of any non-Turkish folks getting one in Ankara.

Thanks, Neil, your posts are always helpful to me! Just checked in Rome and visa service is only open to residence card holders, same as you mentioned for Turkey.

It is sad, since I have not lived in the US for many years. Hong Kong is a small place, even going to Macau requires a passport, so I cannot afford to send my passport to the US for several weeks. After hearing all great things about Syria travel (like NYT piece mentioned recently), it seems like a currently-unattainable dream. Maybe one day! When the stars align . . .

Just wonder if it is possible to get visa at any Syrian Embassy at any other countries before entering Syria? As a American Citizen, I was told by Brazil Consular Officer that I can get visa at Brazil Embassy in Chile to get in Brazil.

This is completely country specific. Just because Brazil allows it, most countries do, doesn't mean that Syria does.
