We are trying to book it down to South America from D.C., and were hoping to save some time by jumping from El Salvador to Nicaragua by ferry (we are driving a station wagon). Does anyone know if a ferry does exist? Basically, we are trying to avoid as many border crossings as possible, and there is a tiny sliver of Honduras that separates El Salvador from Nicaragua. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I've heard something about an irregular ferry across the Gulf of Fonseca, leaving La Union, El Salvador, and arriving Puerto Potosi, Nica. This story is six years old, so take it with a grain of salt. If you are trying to save time and money, I don't think a ferry is your best bet here. Land border crossings aren't particularly painful, whereas port procedures, especially in out-of-the-way places like La Union, are more tedious. If you do it by bus, you might get hit for a dollar or two mordura at the border, but it's not a big deal (and since this ferry crossing is obscure, you'll probably need to pay a bigger bribe if you do it that way). I've never had to spend more than 20-30 minutes with border formalities in Central America at a land crossing.

I caught a boat yesterday with Tomas Gonzales for $50 USD with a motorcycle. However, there's no way you'd put a car on the boat. At present, from my inquiries in broken Spanish, there's no ferry from La Union to Potosi. As a passenger, or with a motorcycle that can be carried by hand into a boat (up to a 650 probably, any bigger would be a nightmare) you can reach Tomas on +503 2648 0050.
