I'm planning my first trip to the German Christmas markets but not my first trip to Germany. I'm looking for a mix of small villages and one or two larger markets. Trying to stay in 2-3 places and visit markets from a base in the area. In doing some digging Bad Wimpfen, Esslingen, Eberback, Miltenberg look like wonderful smaller villages and Wurzberg and Munich look like great larger markets.

Any suggestions on how to get around, where to stay, markets I should consider? Anything in general on visiting Christmas markets. There are so many my head is spinning!
