I am planning on traveling SE Asia soon and in my research many places recommend giving gifts to people that are hospitable towards you and let you either eat at their house or sleep there, but I was wondering what would an appropriate gift be?

I've never brought gifts from home, but if I were invited to someone's home to eat or to sleep I would definitely bring a gift. Flowers or sweets are common here. But I've never travelled to sea so I'd try to find out what kind of hostess gift might be popular there.
