Going through customs w/ pathology slides, anyone have exp.?

I got diagnosed with something in China and need to head to the states for treatment. The thing is, I need to bring my pathology slides in my carry on. I will have one stop over in New Jersey before getting to my destination and that is what worries me, the stop over. Does anyone know if the slides will cause a problem as my carry on is screened/scanned in America?

Please only respond if you have had experience with this kind of situation, work as airport security at an American airport or can forward me to a relevant, trustworthy source on the matter (no hearsay or (educated) guesses please).
