Help me design a fitness themed trip

Postby hokieal » December 12th, 2007

Here is what I'm looking for...

I plan to travel for 5+ months and I'm open to going to any part of the world (I love warm weather but I will go to cold places for a good adventure). I would like to not just have a list of countries to visit but a list of experiences to try that are fitness themed. Doesn't matter if it is climbing a mountain, learning kick boxing, or just doing a really long hike. I'm open to anything and everything, even if I may not be able to do all of it just yet. Oh and it doesn't matter if it takes a day or a month, just throw the suggestions out there.

So what would you guys suggest based on your experiences? Thanks for providing your thoughts.

Oh and btw, long time on and off reader, but this is one of my first posts so hi everybody.

2 Things from my list but keep in mind that I'm insane when it comes to working out.

- Camsur Watersports Complex in the Philippines- supposedly the best cable park in the world. Rent a wakeboard and ride...you will use muscles you never knew existed and will be sore for days. Excellent workout.
- Rock climbing..pretty much anywhere in the world with cliffs.
- Hikes: Cordillera Huayhuash (Peru); Annapurna circuit (Nepal)
- Take an ice climbing course
- Take kiteboarding lessons

I've gone sea kayaking in Alaska, Hawaii and Australia. Its a great upper body work out and in some places you can anchor your kayak or tie it off and jump in for a swim and maybe even a snorkel.
I don't want to be fearless, I want to be brave.

If you need recomendation for sea kayaking in Alaska you may want to check kayaking in Alaske here
I was there last year and had a lot of fun sure I took the kayaking for the fun of it and not as a means for workout but I strongly recommend it.

And of course, there is always Cycle Touring. Whether cycling from Europe to Asia, across Australia or from Patagonia to Washington - it'll definitely make/keep you fit.

Cycling Safaris in Ireland. Beautiful country, great touring, wonderful people, and great biking - some hilly trips, and this company runs top notch tours. Reasonably priced and fun, yet laid-back. Bike, drink, sleep, repeat - was kind of the theme when I went.

A couple of things that I'd like to do -

Walk across England through the Lake District - or maybe Ireland or maybe both!

Hike Milford Track, Overland Track, Inca Trail, Great Wall, Kilimanjaro and Annapurna Circuit.

Ride a bike from N-S Vietnam.

Learn to surf.

Marathon on every continent - one down - six to go (or maybe five - I'm not tough enough for Antarctica)

Mine are pretty mellow, but they excite me. Smile
