Highway robbery near Middleburg

Postby heritqage Arts » February 25th, 2009

While we stopped along the N-11 between Joburg and Kruger Park, for lunch, we were approached by a man with a nametag and and in a outfit that made us believe he worked there. He told us that the toll booth 's computers were down and that we could save time and waiting in line if we pre-purchased a toll pass. We could do that at the ATM , which he was happy to show us. It all happened so fast and thankfully we were left intact. There was actually 2 or 3 crooks and we believe the employees at tha Spur resturaunt we ate at were in on this together. The man showed us to the ATM and tried to show us how to use it to get a toll pass. They kinddof closed in on us and pointed at this button " no non that button,,no hold this one and ENTER YOUR PIN "and before we knew it my creditcard was gone. To make a long story short...my American accent , and loud voice got the attention of other honest people and before I knew it someone was shoving my credit card back into the ATM machine (acting like it was stuck inside the machine), and dissappeared so fast ....I retrieved imy card only to be told that they probably switched it. We lucked out. Our card was not taken, we were not injured and before we knew it we were back on the road wondering what just happened.....A trip to the bank the next day confirmed that our card OK .
These people probably had us pegged from the moment we drove in. 2 things went our direction #1 it was a card we got upon arrival and did not work in the ATM #2 My husband had the card and I had the password, and #3 honest people stepped in and helped. In 30 years of traveling to SA this was the first incident we ever had...We will be back again next year
