check out

http://www.hostels.com/en/us.ny.ny.html

that is where i got a list of nyc hostels in order to advertise my study on American backpackers. I visited most of them.

Jazz on the town looked good and it's in a great location (near the east village)
i liked the vibe at the wonderer's inn at west 113th street- it got great reviews, but i think it's in Harlem (interesting cultural environment)and i asked about prices- less than 40/night

if the website above works for you, they have info and phone numbers for all the places

Here's the deal: 30 bucks per night, single or double rooms only (yeah, they're less than tiny, but hey - you don't wanna stay in when you're in New York, do you?!)

I have been having trouble finding cheap places in New York, until I came across this thread that is. Great stuff everyone!

As the Whitehouse seems to get a big thumbs up from everyone I decided to look in to it and the above quote seems to ring true. Look here for more details http://www.whitehousehotelofny.com/files/reserve5.html

I'll second the plug for Chelsea International Hostel. My partner and I stayed three nights in October in one of their private rooms for $70 a night. The room was slightly wider than the double bed, had a shelf for clothes and stuff, a small sink, and hooks for hanging clothes. The place was secure and clean. The toilet and shower were shared by the five rooms on each floor. Although I can't speak to the dorm rooms, it was a neat place, and we'd go there again. The location was great -- right in Chelsea, and within a couple blocks of several subway lines.

check hostels in nyc (chelsea, time square are good areas, harlem hostel is good from what i saw). google hostels in nyc. The other option, maybe slightly more expansive, are the YMCAs in new york. Call them for details.

I think Im going to try Chelsea hostel out. Seem safe and central. Im going solo, so Id like somewhere that is cool to socialize. I think this would be considered the off season, though its unseasonably warm this year. I wont go this weekend, but probably next...Oct. 27/28....its only a weekend trip. Leave Sat Morning, come back Monday afternoon Eek

Roundtrip greyhound $20 online.

Also, it seems mandatory to have passport for all NYC hostels. State ID wont do, so be aware of that. It would be disappointing to get there and have them penalize your credit card for not being able to stay, and then have to shell out hundreds for a hotel. Eek.

I stayed at the Times Square Beds (book thru BnA) this past weekend. And for my first hostel experience, Id give it a big thumbs up! It was small, but clean and cozy. I only slept there, but the beds were way comfy. Its two blocks from times square and the port authority (a 10 for convenience). The guy who runs it is real nice. You have to take your shoes off at the door, I liked that. Me and one other girl there, we checked out the same day. She was from HK, and travelling solo. We didnt hang out, but she was cool. Everyone was cool! The price includes the taxes already, so you dont have to worry about extra cost when you pay. And the location is low key, the block was kinda seedy, but I liked that it didnt say "hostel" out front, it didnt say anything, just a nondescript building. lol

Oh, and even though I brought my passport, he didnt ask for it, he never even asked for my ID. lol So that was interesting...

^^Can you tell me the best, least congested way to drive into NYC from Philadelphia on a Saturday?? The choices are GW bridge, Lincoln, and Holland tunnel right?? I want to take my mom to a Bway play, she's only in town for the weekend and I dont want to waste alot of time at the bus station. Crazy

As for the TSB hostel - Saturday was $49, and Sunday was $44. On the high end for a hostel, but for the convenience it was definitley worth it. Splitform

^^ Let 1010WINS be your guide on this one. Smile They do a traffic report every 10 minutes, on the 8s.

I don't drive around the city so can't really say. If I took a guess, I'd say the GW Bridge (seems like you can shoot up the West Side Highway if there's no accidents) -- but what do I know.

I stayed at a place called Times Square Hostel, I believe. I don't THINK it was the same as Times Square Beds Hostel. It was about $25 a night. I can't say too many negative things. It was in the process of becoming whatever it was when I was there last year, so it was pretty disorganized, but the people running it were nice and the location was good. It was relatively quiet and comfortable. I booked through the link here on BnA.

I remembered there being a Times Square Hostel on BnA, because I was sorta looking for it when I came across this one. I dont think its the same one either.

Okay, Im goin back to new york again. This time stayin' at Hotel 17, a budget hotel on BnA. Its in Manhattan, east village, 2 blocks from Union Sq. 100 bucks/night, single room, shared bathroom. I dont wanna do the dorm thing this time, because Ill need a nap before the play (How the Grinch Stole Xmas, hehe). I get off work at 7am, then hop the greyhound (20 bucks round trip) to NYC. The show is at 8 though.
