One method I am using to try and raise money for my summer travels (besides working and saving as much as possible) it setting up a website for my trip and gaining a supportive community. That way I may be able to meet some of these kind people along the way.

Feel free to check out my site for ideas on setting up your own. It's at:

A few people have even given me small donations! Can't hurt to give it a shot. Oh and in the meantime be as frugal as possible with what money you do earn, of course.

I have never been much good with money. Whenever I would get a raise or a new, better-paying job, the cost of my "lifestyle" would rise by the same percentage. I finally decided to take saving for travel out of my hands. Rather than make the normal budget, where you write out all your expenses and then hope to have enough left over to save a bit, I switched up the priorities.

I decided the very first priority is saving $1000 a month and paying off debt. Those were the first items I put on the budget, and adjusted everything else as needed to accommodate that need. I canceled my home TV and internet service, use the library for media needs, and cut other discretionary spending.

My final step was to set up automatic transfers from my checking account to savings every week for $231. I made similar arrangements for any debts that I was paying down.

Good One "DreamerHelen" Thanks for the tip, very practical & creative, one has to do what one has to do to escape the system long enough to travel the world and maybe just maybe who knows may find the path to annother lifestyle beyond our present dreams. Guess my early rising habit started with building our first beach resort on Boracay island in the Philippines when I was 34 as it seems the at least one male in every Filipino family in the provinces raises fighting cocks so woke up to the sound of COCKA DOODLE DOOOOOO from 4:30 AM to 6AM everyday. Then usually enjoyed a nap in the afternoons. Sex in the morning always works for me making me want to spring out of bed and get ON with the day's "Things to do List" but each person is different, causing others to go to sleep. Other than that drinking 2 or 3 cups of strong brewed coffee while processing bookings on line helps motivate me. The 3 rules of Waking UP MOTIVATED- Caffeine Caffeine Caffeine

Re: Bravo "Highcountry"- Great List of Tips

Postby AsiaBill » July 30th, 2009

Great to see people are still eager and turned on to traveling the world no matter what financial background they come from. Great list of tips "highcountry"

Highcountry wrote:Hello Katerina, You have received some good ideas here .Here are some more:
1. ID any skills you have that are transferable, worldwide.Example: If you do a pretty good job of cutting hair, then refine your talents before you leave. A friend of mine payed for a 2 YEAR RTW just by cutting hair along the way for cash in hostels, etc. She then returned home to her small cottage that had been subletted x 2 years with two more years of equity courtesy of her renter.Think about a sublesee for your home if you owe it.Be very careful, however. Vet them!!!If your car is paid off, sell it. When you return, you can put a minimum down on another car. You will also save paying auto insurance in your absence. If you want to keep the car, suspend the insurance. Either way, you save.Cut out CABLE, 'net access at home and CELL PHONE! You will will be able to save at least $100/month. Use the time not watching TV to go for runs, bike rides to toughen you up for the road.Learn Spanish. Perhaps, trade some ESL/Spanish instruction with a Hispanic who wants to learn English.Health Insurance: Ideally, you could do a COBRA thing if feasible. Otherwise, some sort of travel insurance. Yes, this is a cost but a health crisis overseas without health insurance could bankrupt your great-grandchildren!Invest in an above average digital camera. See if you can sell your pics and travelogues. Not an easy market to break into but once you sell a few articles, you may then be sought out by publishers.Suggestion: Contact LLBean about sponsoring you in exchange for travel pics to them wearing their gear.Eat plain, active culture yogurt every day, starting today. Good way to keep your gut healthy whilst on the road.It is great that you both have very different places that you would like to visit. Do all the research you can so you do not get hit unawares by unexpected costs.Check out thread on Ultimate Travel List. Last thing you want is two albatrosses of "stuff" to drag around the world! Bottom line is this...be creative, have vision and flexibility and have FUN!Goudaluckatoyou...says this grandson in honor of his late grandmother who emigrated from the old country.Highcountry

Re: Wasn't Born with That Preference nor Body & Looks

Postby AsiaBill » July 30th, 2009

Wasn't Born with That Preference nor Body & Looksbut had I been I might have been tempted to go for it. I have met world traveler females who made a whole lotta of money this way in Japan and Singapore for a few months at time then would just hang out on one of S.E Asia's many beaches, get high and mellow out from the leftover head trips aka mental baggage.

Travel4Life wrote:I also want the quick and easy way to get money for my next trip. I just returned from an amazing seven month trip in central europe, after working real hard and being very frugal for two years. I don't have the patience to do such a thing again for my next trip to South America. So for me, there is actually a relatively "easy" way to make a lot money... work as a high-end male escort. Morally and ethically, I have no problem doing this, as I sleep with enough guys anyway. The problem would be the absolute unpleasantness of the moments when I was "working". Even more importantly would be the potential for diseases, even though I would have "safer sex" in all facets of the job... you can't put a price on health. I haven't decided yet, but its so freakin tempting.Has anybody else sold their body for travel cash?

Good One "WhereForArt" Recycling is righteous and one person's trash is another person's treasure. Becoming or advertising oneself as a conceirge ( sp? ) is a great idea also because people with high salaries or with both husband and wife working professionals are in dire need of someone who can do things not worth their time and willing to pay decent wages or rates for such services. 8-)

WhereForArt wrote:quote:Originally posted by carpe diem:just a thought. i was reading the paper and there are a ton of people looking for egg donors and they pay 3000-10000. So if you dont mind donating some eggs there would be your travel money Be careful if you do that, though - I read an article once saying that there can be long-term health problems for women who are egg donors. Make sure you go into it having done your research.Others have talked about this, but a friend of mine saves money by traveling around on garbage day looking for good things that people have thrown out, and then sells them on Ebay. She sold a table lamp the other day for $50 that she found on the curb, and uses the money she makes to finance her vacation. She also gets things from friends that they want to get rid of and don't have the time to sell them. She sells it for them and keeps 50% as her "commission." Also, you might try selling services like pet-sitting or pet-walking (one friend does this for a living and makes a killing), house-cleaning, grocery shopping (I have another lawyer friend who pays a woman $20/hour to shop for her), etc. There are a lot of people who have the money to pay someone else to do things they don't like to do - you just have to find them and convince them to let you do it.

Good Simple Tips which enable anyone to save more money than they dreamed possible, Thanks "Whistler"

Thermos flasks are great when at work or going to the beach etc., because you have your own tea or coffee. If you smoke, each time you reach for a ciggie, make yourself wait 5 minutes before taking it out of the packet. Later you can build it up to 10 minutes and more. This helps cut down on the numbers. If you normally eat 2 sandwiches make do with just 1.When buying groceries, house cleaning products etc. and they are on special put the amount saved in a jar. I also put my 50 cent pieces away plus a $2.00 coin each week in the jar.Try buying from op shops for clothing and furniture etc. You can save heaps. Scour your home for things you don't really need and have a garage sale.Use cold water in the washing machine, put the clothes on the line instead of using a dryer and keep the lights off unless you really need them on. This saves quite a bit off the electricity bill.I found I saved a lot from doing this oh and I stopped buying stuff like biscuits/cakes and other junk tyoe foods.Good Luck with yous saving,Have a nice day, Whistler. If you can keep a sense of humour and see the funny side of life, you will never be old. I'm on my way to building up a great low maintenance income. Its tough work to start with and its definitely not a get rich quick scheme. But I can work from anywhere with a computer and an internet connection and travel the world at the same time! Lovin it! I learnt everything I know from these guys. If you want out of the rat race these guys can help.

Well, I'm still in the process of saving for an around the world trip. We're planning to leave in June, and the budget is looking good so far.

My husband and I are both teachers in the U.S. We have cut all of the fat out of our spending money. In addition, we both picked up extra jobs after school. He does tutoring, and I teach a test-prep class two days a week. Aside from that, we babysit, paint interior bedrooms, and we'll do pretty much any other odd job for extra cash.

Don't forget to pay attention to the bank promotions! We made an extra $225 by each opening a Chase Checking account. The banks are really trying to get everyone's money...so it works out for us! Also, you might want to sign up for an airline credit card. We put all of our monthly expenditures on the credit card just so we can get the points. Then, we pay it off at the end of each month.

By the end of our whole savings scheme, we will most likely rent out our condo, sell our cars and furniture, and become free! The more stuff you have, the more complicated your life seems to be. We're trying to put a stop to that.

I would just like to say that I posted the original thread and am glad to see that is still going(even though it's with my old profile sporting my ex's last name=P) I now find myself going through all the suggestions as I plan, once again, my RTW trip, this time with friends. I just didn't have a willing travel buddy last time.

So I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that has responded to this thread. Your suggestions are so very helpful and I'm glad they keep on coming!

Just a reminder - with holiday season coming up, retailers will be hiring extra help! That may be an easy way to add some extra hours. I bet it will be more competitive than usual b/c the recession means less people will be hiring and more people applying, but it's a good idea!

This year, I'm pretty broke and am trying to save back up to get myself on my feet...so for holiday gifts, I'm making stuff (and I started already). I already found yarn on sale and am knitting a few holiday gifts...
