How to Load a Unique Avatar?

Postby Sean » November 28th, 2003

*** Updated Dec 9th, 2005 ***

I have received this request a few times...so here goes.

Goal: You want to load a unique avatar, but you don't know how... here is how.

1) You need a digital picture of what you want to be your avatar. Can be a digital photo or any digital JPG or GIF image.

2) Using your favorite photo editing software (Photoshop and the like), crop the image to a square. Then re-size it to 55 by 55 pixels. Pixels is a measurement of space for digital images. Save this image and remember where you saved it on your computer.

3) Go to the main page for the BootsnAll boards. Click on your name to get to your profile. Then click "view/edit complete profile" at the top right.

4) Scoll down to "Avatar" and click "edit"

5) Click "custom avatar" at the top, then "browse" -- go find the image you saved and select it, then click "Avatar Me"

Your avatar will then be seen on BootsnAll.

If you do not know what I am taking about - once you get to 100+ posts, send me your digital picture and I will create the avatar for you.

Ta dahhhhh

Making jokes is the third best disguise there is. Second comes the sentimentalism. But in my opinion the best and most perfect disguise is telling the truth, as it is. It’s funny. No one believes it.

Hey Sean, thanks for the directions. Now I can put my modular, reconstructed, multicolour self on display!

Yup. When I hit "browse" or "avatar me", in the bottom of the upload window, I get that little yellow triangle and it says "Error on page." But doesn't give me any more guidance than that.

In My Space->Profiles, I click edit my profile and I see the section to edit my avatar, but it is disabled. Do I need to reach 100 posts for it to become enabled?

The instructions at the top of this thread have been updated to reflect a change in how the boards handle custom avatars. You no longer need to host the image yourself, you can upload it directly from your hard drive.

Any further questions or help making/editing your avatar can be directed to me, as well. I'd be happy to crop and resize your photo and send it back to you for uploading if you don't want to mess with it yourself. Just send me a PM and I'll tell you where to email me the photo.

I've also deleted a number of posts out of this thread that talked about URLs, so as not to confuse anyone with old info.

now, let's see some more cool, custom avatars!
