I have often wondered how other travellers have made money while they are travelling..
Buying certain items to sell at the next destination, waiting tables, tending bar, even money saving tips...
Any suggestions?

The most important thing to do is just ask - I got a lot of work at hostels I stayed in, ranging from a couple of hours a day for a free bed to more hours for some money. Whenever I got to a new place, I'd ask if they had any work going - it's amazing how many jobs are filled by word of mouth. Hostel notice boards are a good source for casual work, and for things like bar or waiter work, go round the bars and restaurants and ask! It's a bit rough being turned down a lot, but it really does work - this is also the case for things like crewing on yachts. You don't usually get paid, but it's a great experience, and cheaper than flying.

Good luck and enjoy big grin

Sometimes you can arrange work and work visas. It all depends on your nationality, where you're going, and sometimes your age or whether or not you're a student. But they can be great ways to earn cash, and a visa can make it easier to get a job. You can stay in one place, find a cool gig and earn plenty of dosh, or you can also just move around, and pick up different work as you go, whatever you want. Here's a link that lists different work programs and visa resources:

I've done plenty of travelling and working abroad and would say a long as you look around and ask questions you'll find something.

Having a work visa is an advantage, but half the travellers in Japan and Korea don't have proper work visas.

In my time I've picked fruit in Australia, driven taxi cab in California, caught fish in Alaska and waited tables in Hong Kong. If you have skills ( tending bar, cutting hair, decorating, fixing cars ) you will have no trouble finding work.

If an employer asks for your work permit, you left it at home, you'll bring it tomorrow. Fill in the tax form, get on the payroll and they'll never ask again.

At the end of the day employers want employees willing to work, they are not trying to stop you working.

If you can tend bar or wait tables you can survive in any city in the world. Most restaurants are only a week away from letting someone go, so even if a place says they're not hiring, go back again and again.

Go to the employment office and ask for leads, remember, you have a work permit and you left it at home. I got some good leads in Australia like that.

Talk to locals. They know Johnny or Jimmy with the business who's hiring right now. I talked to a lot of locals while hitch hiking. Another great way is to go to the local bar. Sit in front of the cash register so everytime the bartender rings up a drink he has to be in front of you. Strike up a conversation and tell him out right you're looking for work, does he know of anything going on. Hang out, don't get drunk and he'll introduce you to most of the people who come in. It won't be long before you've got leads let me tell you!

Good luck

If you want to earn money while backpacking,
consider volunteering for medical trials and
other research experiments! If you are healthy,
drug-free at least a few weeks, and are fluent
in the language of the country you are in,you
have a good chance of making money this way.I
have done many such experiments over last 10
years and have had no problems with it.Check
out www.gpgp.net for more info,as well as a
free directory of several hundred clinics
worldwide.

Scary concept...
