I wish we could embed videos
That would be really groovy.

I think it would probably kill the performance of the boards. As it is, I seem to regularly denied access. That could be a personal slight though.

How so? The vids don't need to be hosted by BnA. Youtube videos are easy to embed with html. There are options.quote:Originally posted by skobb:

Videos of a dBase iii and Lotus 1-2-3 demo?quote:Originally posted by Llalewyn:
However, I really don't want to see the kind of videos Stoo would embed into threads.

I double checked to be sure, but embedding of video is not something that is allowed by this forum software. Apparently admins can do it if a HTML setting is enabled (which is off by default) and certain code is added. Non-admins cannot, which kinda blows.
I'll try and see if I can add some video here as an admin...
<object width="425" height="344"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/jvG2_3BSSKw&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344">

Weird. It works when I'm logged in as one admin, but not as another. Either way, it's of no use to anyone else on the boards for the time being.
Sorry folks

Then the question becomes...should normal users be allowed to post in HTML format?
I'm guessing no because I see too many opportunities for abuse, but it could be something for you Grand Poobahs at the Lodge to consider.

Allowing mere mortals to insert HTML is probably a no-go. There are zillions of different security issues. BOOTCOM has enough problems keeping the banner ad folks inline, let alone the posting masses.
But, and this is really on Groupee (or whatever they are called), maybe a youtube-centric approach would be workable. The embed tag HTML that hydro posts from youtube is all static except for the link. So if there were another button on the tool bar, like the bold or picture buttons, that we could enter in a youtube url into then that would be safe. The BBCode might look like this: [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/v/jvG2_3BSSKw&hl=en&fs=1]

Agreed, Stoo, and apparently it is in the developer queue over at Groupee to make that happen. No clue as to how long it will be though, unfortunately.

As a non-techie my question is: will having all these embedded videos make the threads slower to load?
The reason I ask is that with my connection I get quite slow load times on a lot of threads already.

No, the idea of embedding videos is that they would only load if you click on them to start them playing. Otherwise they're just like any other post. Also, if lots of people were playing the video performance of the boards would not be effected because the video is hosted on another site altogether.
